Biogeochemical processes in coastal and continental systems
It includes the initial diagenesis of organic matter in coastal systems, the effects caused by diagenetic processes (regeneration of nutrients), and the associated gas flows, as well as the establishment of nutrient dynamics and the measurement of the role of diagenetic processes in climate change. The development of equipment and methodologies for the study of the coastal zone is included.

Ocean and Earth Physics and Geodynamics
It includes hydrodynamic processes in bays and estuaries, coastal dynamics, regional and applied geomorphology, regional and applied marine geology, active geological processes, the interaction of flows in straits, the numerical modeling of ocean-atmosphere and ocean-lithosphere interactions, pollutant discharges and emissions, as well as aspects of operational oceanography, physical-biological coupling and biogechemical cycles in the Gulf of Cádiz, the Alboran Sea and the Strait of Gibraltar, engineering of coasts, beaches and dunes, and remote sensing applied to the marine and terrestrial environments. Geophysics and Geodesy

Structure and Dynamics of Aquatic Ecosystems
It includes aspects such as the ecophysiology of macroalgae and marine angiosperms, control of primary production by environmental variables, structure, dynamics and biodiversity of benthic systems dominated by macrophytes, their cultivation and their interest as bioindicators of environmental quality, benthic microbial ecology, marine microbial mats, application of biofilms to water purification, biogeochemical cycles of carbon and nitrogen in marine sediments, sequestration and mobilization of metals in sediments, biological oceanography and limnology, trophic networks, phytoplankton and zooplankton, pelagic systems, larval recruitment, biogeochemical cycles and regional oceanography of the coasts of the Gulf of Cádiz, the Alboran Sea and the Strait of Gibraltar.
