Doctoral programmes
The International Doctoral School in Sea Studies, EIDEMAR, began its activities in 2013-2014, and it currently offers five Doctoral programmes:
- Doctoral programme in Marine Science and Technology
- Doctoral programme in Management and Conservation of the Sea
- Doctoral programme in Maritime History and Archaeology
- Doctoral programme in Marine Resources
- Erasmus Mundus Doctoral programme in Marine and Coastal Management
According to Real Decreto 99/2011, the most important characteristics of the new Doctoral programmes are as follows:
- They have a duration of three academic years, or five for part-time students (article 14 of the regulations establishes the conditions for extensions and leave).
- The Doctoral programme includes a series of training and research activities, each of which involves a minimum number of working hours. Before the defence of the Doctoral thesis takes place, a minimum of 600 hours must have been completed.
- At the time of application, the student will select his/her preferred avenue(s) of research from those offered by the Doctoral programme and state this preference. The academic committee will afterwards evaluate this application and assign a tutor who will ensure that the training of the Doctoral candidate and his/her research activity fits the requirements for the Doctoral programme and the school. The tutor will personally supervise the activities carried out by the Doctoral candidate, using the official Document of Activities of Doctoral Candidates (DAD).
- Within the first six months, the academic committee will assign a thesis supervisor (the appointment of an academic co-supervisor is also possible). Within the first year the Doctoral candidate must design a Research Plan (which replaces the traditional Doctoral Thesis Project), the content of which can be improved and elaborated over the course of the programme.
- Each year, the academic committee will evaluate the Research Plan and the Document of Activities of Doctoral Candidates of each Doctoral candidate, along with the reports issued by the tutor and the director.
- The Doctoral programme finishes with the submission of a Doctoral thesis, which is an original research work carried out by the Doctoral candidate on the topics studied in the Doctoral programme. The objective of the thesis is to prepare the Doctoral candidate for autonomous and professional work in the field of R&D.
